K. Read At the eyepiece of a telescope

The Yorkshire Planetarium – K. Read at the eyepiece of a telescope.

The Yorkshire Planetarium is a mobile planetarium run by Mr. Kevin Read who has a degree in astro-physics and planetary science and who is also a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He also holds a current enhanced DBS check and helped to run an astronomical observatory in Pontefract for 17 years. With his 25 years experience in space sciences and a recent degree qualification you can tap directly into a wealth of knowledge. The variety of shows and discussions can be tailored to your specific educational needs and the great thing is that we come to you. There are no trips to organise and no trip expenses. We travel to surrounding counties as well, so do not think we are limited to Yorkshire.

Many people anticipate that they will just be looking at the night sky. They get quite a surprise when they receive a much more holistic approach to how we interact with space and how it affects our life on Earth. I do not just show many films in the dome that have a voice-over. I personally discuss and explain the content of the films with the audience and involve them as much as possible.  I also encourage questions from the children. Every single teacher over the past years has told me how impressed they were with the content, so why not find out for yourself? Please bear in mind that the future for today’s Primary School children in space science areas is one of the currently biggest growing industries in the UK. They need to have their eyes opened to their future, a future that did not exist for today’s adults. If you cannot answer a 10-year old when they ask whether space and time is flat or curved you need a visit by The Yorkshire Planetarium (actual question posed to the presenter by a 10 year old student).

The mission is to educate the next space-generation in space science subjects that affect their lives here on Earth.
